Hi! I’m Rick Simonson. I’m an artist, illustrator, and visual problem-solver.

Finding creative solutions to visual problems is what I do best. I am a disciplined and self-motivated creative professional. My goal is to create exceptional illustration and design work for scientific and technical industries while simultaneously advancing my creative skills. I can work efficiently alone or as part of a team: over the course of my professional career, I have developed my ability to manage teams of individuals effectively to complete large projects. Working quickly and successfully meeting deadlines is always a priority.

My combination of artistic skill and scientific knowledge makes me uniquely qualified to visually communicate science. I developed my scientific knowledge through over twenty-five years in academia, where I conducted research in cell biology, protein biochemistry, molecular biology, ecology, and biological control. This experience has provided me with a practical understanding of common laboratory and field techniques as well as methods of statistical analysis. I have also taught classes in both biology and illustration: a wide range of biology lecture and lab courses at the undergraduate level; scientific Illustration courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels both in-person and online; and presentations and workshops on scientific illustration techniques and practices at professional conferences. As a result of this combined expertise, I have been able to produce work that has been featured in textbooks, lab manuals, scientific journals, technical manuals, websites, and gallery exhibits.

I serve as President and Visual Science Communicator at Science Lab Studios, Inc.

I have been an active member of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators since 2003. GNSI Member Spotlight
